Audition Information & Procedures

September 2010

The Board of Directors of Unionville Theatre Company (UTC) welcomes you to this information session concerning our upcoming 2010/2011 production. For over  3 decades, the Company has presented high quality productions of popular Broadway musicals presented by talented performers and production staff who live primarily in York Region. Our Mission Statement encapsulates what we do:

We will operate a repertory company focused on but not limited to young people that will through study, performance, production and competition advance knowledge and appreciation of theatre and the role it has played and continues to play in our culture and tradition; such that each person involved with our company participates in a learning experience that enhances their lives.

This year, UTC is preparing for its upcoming production; Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic CATS.  The production will take place at the Markham Theatre for the Performing Arts beginning Wednesday Feb 23 for six performances seating over 3,000 patrons. Performance Dates are as follows:

Wednesday, February 23

School Matinee (10:30am)

Thursday, February 24

Saturday, February 26

As with our previous productions, UTC stages professional work incorporating full lighting and sound aids, costumes, detailed sets and props and a complete orchestral accompaniment. UTC augments the theatrical space and technical aspects of our production with professional directors, choreographers and conductors.

We are a registered Non-profit Community Theatre Company and so depend on our community for our success by supporting us in a number of ways. Through your commitment and support, we can continue to enhance the lives of the entire community.

 Actor Commitments

Potential candidates should be aware of two items before they undertake the audition process. First of all, we hold rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Please note that all actors will initially not be needed for all rehearsals but are required to be available. Actors should ensure that they are able to meet this commitment. In addition to this, we move into the Markham Theatre on Sunday Feb 20th and we will be there until the end of the run on Sunday February 27th. All actors must be confident that they are able to attend every day for that week. Detailed rehearsal schedules are prepared and distributed to all cast on a regular basis throughout the season.

Secondly, successful candidates should be aware that a participation fee of $400.00 is required and this payment is due on the first day of rehearsals. This fee goes directly into the production to help cover production costs of approximately $60,000.00. These costs include theatre rental, Creative Team fees, set construction, costumes, props etc.

 Parental/Family Commitments

The Unionville Theatre Company is able to deliver an extremely high quality production at minimal expense owing to the strength of community involvement and participation. Volunteer participation is an important part of our success and we urge family and friends to get involved. Volunteers are needed in a variety of areas and we are sure that the experience will enhance and enrich your lives.

 Audition Requirements

All persons who wish to audition for a role in CATS should begin by completing the Audition Form. The Company is currently seeking 40 – 50 actors who are 10-99 years old effective September 1, 2010 and who are interested in this challenging production. In accordance with our constitution, preference is given to York Region applicants and to former UTC cast members although we accept audition requests from individuals outside of York Region. Following this information session, aspiring actors can reserve their audition time slot. They can begin preparing for their audition by…

             1. Vocal – All actors, including chorus and principal roles, are required to prepare and present a song for the audition committee. You may wish to present your song with or without musical accompaniment however song lyrics with the accompaniment (i.e. words) are not permitted.

            2. Dance & Movement – All candidates will perform a movement/dance audition. The choreographer will direct those with little or no dance experience at the time.

            3. Monologue – All actors are required to present a one minute memorized monologue.

            4. Photograph – All completed Audition Applications should include a current photograph of the auditioning actor. Photographs will not be returned.

Selected actors may be called back for additional auditions as required. All persons auditioning for a part will be notified by early October to inform them of the final cast selections.

Information is currently being updated on our website www.unionvilletheatre.com or contact the UTC telephone hotline 416-765-1135

GOOD LUCK TO ALL AUDITION CANDIDATES!!!
